We asked Mary to share her story about moving to Canada.
Here’s what she said:
My name is Mary. I came to Canada from Beijing, China. I am 19 years old. I have lived in Canada for 2 years.
I really like living in Canada. It is a beautiful country. I love the big mountains and all the trees. I love all the animals, especially the beaver!
I have many new friends. I met students in the YES program and we made friends with students from Vancouver Community College. We had a party together, and I had a lot of fun. Everyone at the party was new to Canada and from different countries. We danced, listened to music, played piano, and ate a lot of good food. I was so happy!
Sometimes I go to church in Richmond. I have made many new friends at my Church. Sometimes we do cooking activities at church and also we sing songs.
I go golfing with my father. The course is so big, but we walk together. I am a good golfer I think, but my father is not. We enjoy this time together.
On the weekends I go to look at “Open Houses” with my mother and father. It is interesting because the houses here are so much bigger than in China.
As a special trip, my parents and I drive to Seattle and we go shopping together. Recently my mother bought a new bag, and I got some new shoes. I like Seattle.
I like to eat Pizza and hot-dogs and hamburgers in Canada. They are delicious, but I still like to eat rice and Chinese food sometimes too.
Now I am studying English every day. I am learning a lot of new things quickly. I like learning English. The more I learn the more I can make friends and have fun in Canada.
I don’t really miss China, I am happy living in Canada, and it feels like my new home. I want to stay here forever!
